A Day At A Time in Rhyme

A Day At A Time in Rhyme is an immersive new piece of hybrid theatre written and performed by industry veteran Jane Clifton, comprising spoken word, soundscape, image and music, with source material drawn from her 2019 published poetry diary of the same name. Using the four seasons as a framing device, A Day At A Time in Rhyme is a one woman tour de force that takes us into a year of Jane’s life as she peels back the layers to share her witty – and often poignant – observations on life. In this revealing, riveting hour-long performance, nothing is off limits as Jane reflects on – amongst other things – love and death and family, incontinence and wine, war and sex and Vegemite, footy, children, Christmas, Easter, and the best and worst of times. Supported by sound effects, music and projections, Jane will perform about 35 of the original 365 poems in a dramatised monologue, drawing on the personal to the universal as she runs the entire gamut of reflection, humour, tragedy, wit and whimsy. Let Jane’s raw honesty and humour leave you feeling inspired and uplifted as we reconnect with the joy and profoundness found in life’s fleeting moments… Additional Copy for Optional Act 2 add-on Following the performance, join us for an interactive second act where Jane will facilitate a Q&A session and discuss her process of writing poetry and how you can record the simple, everyday things in your life, too. We might even write a poem together!

An Evening with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Artistic Director of Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Sophie Rowell, joins QSO Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici for a wonderful program that sees the MSO performing music of child prodigy Felix Mendelssohn alongside that of the (then) living legend he looked up to: the great Ludwig van Beethoven. The terrifying tale of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is the manifestation of many-a-musician’s nightmares. If the fact that it was written in a just a few rushed weeks wasn’t bad enough, the violinist engaged for the premiere was so unprepared that he was forced to sight-read much of it during the concert. With its lyrical lines and effervescent display of the violin’s capabilities, however, Beethoven’s only work for violin and orchestra (thankfully) survived its origin story, and is now considered one of the best in the repertoire. Inspired by the ruins of the Palace of Holyrood, Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony evokes a musical restoration of the castle and its stories of love, war, betrayal, and murder. Bursting with intrigue, this symphony paints a sonic picture of pale Scottish light casting shadows on centuries-old, moss-covered stone. Please note: Exclusive Members presale is from 6.00pm Tuesday 12 December until Wednesday 20 December at 9.00am.

Act One – The Ukrainian showpiece…Forest Song This legendary ballet, which for over 75 years remains the pride of Ukraine. Forest Song is a magical love story, full of mysticism alongside the conflict between the human world and nature. It tells a tale of love and the fearless and brave Mavka, who longs for peace in her world, just as Ukraine longs for peace in her country today. Act Two – Don Quixote This flamboyant and festive Spanish ballet is a much-loved romantic comedy. It tells the story of a courageous but troubled man’s quest for love. Gypsies, bullfighters, lavish costumes, breath-taking dancers and an inspiring music score ensures that Don Quixote is a not-to-be-missed experience. Two sensational performances. One magnificent evening of ballet.
